ABOUT THE ROLE:
Avenue Consultants’ Environmental team, which specializes in providing environmental consulting services for a variety of clients, is seeking an experienced Archaeologist to join our growing team. Specifically, we are looking for an Archeologist that will execute project work while seeking to establish, lead, and grow a Cultural Resources team as part of our Environmental group.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage archaeological investigations, including survey, excavation, and site documentation, in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including site reconnaissance, artifact identification, and excavation, utilizing appropriate methods and techniques.
  • Prepare comprehensive archaeological reports, including site records, analysis, and interpretation of findings.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including historians, anthropologists, and environmental specialists, to integrate archaeological findings into larger projects.
  • Engage in consultation and coordination with relevant stakeholders, including Native American tribes, state agencies, and federal authorities, to ensure compliance with cultural resource regulations.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of cultural resource management plans and strategies including hiring and development of staff
  • Participate in public outreach activities, including public presentations, educational programs, and community engagement initiatives, to promote awareness and appreciation of the region’s cultural heritage
  • Oversee project budgets and resource allocation for cultural resource activities, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to project timelines.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting teamwork, creativity, and professional growth within the cultural resource team.
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to integrate cultural resource considerations into overall project planning and decision-making processes.
  • Facilitate effective communication and coordination with clients, government agencies, and tribal entities regarding cultural resource team activities.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends and advancements, regulations, guidelines and best practices in cultural resource management

To be successful, this person should have the following:

  • Graduate level degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in the Archaeology field with a focus on the Intermountain West Region.
  • Permits to conduct archaeological surveys and excavations in Utah; Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona are optional.
  • Experience in and familiarity with Intermountain West cultural history, specifically the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau regions.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations related to cultural resource management, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Proven expertise in archaeological survey, excavation, artifact analysis, and report writing.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations related to cultural resource management, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Familiarity with tribal consultation protocols and experience collaborating with Native American tribes.
  • Strong understanding of the history, prehistory, and cultural dynamics of the Intermountain West region.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Proficient in using GIS and archaeological software for data analysis and mapping.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex archaeological concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Relationships with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. National Forest Service, and Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration.
